About Mike Walter

Mike Walter was born and raised in Billings, Montana. Attracted to Montana’s natural beauty, rich culture and diverse wildlife, Mike is a detailed observer. Whether capturing a landscape, a glimpsed silhouette or a face, the elicited emotion gives birth to his paintings. Mike is accomplished with oils and pencils but he particularly likes watercolor for its immediateness, its transparencies, its nuances, and the ceaseless fight between the pigment-loaded water and the paper. Mike’s painting is known for his brilliant use of light. He uses bold colors and energetic brushstrokes to create paintings that are both beautiful and powerful. |
A formally trained artist, he received his Associate of Arts degree from Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. Later, Mike has participated in several advanced workshops and had the incredible opportunity to study under the highly-collected, master painter, Hall Diteman.
Mike has won numerous awards and prizes over the span of his career. Some of the more prestigious include being elected the Billings Artist of the Year by his peers in 1996 and winning the People’s Choice Award at the Juried Art Exhibit of the Yellowstone County Fair in 1997. In 1999 the world-renowned artist, Charles Fritz, judged Mike’s oil 1st place at the Billings Art Association annual juried art show.
Mike’s love of the outdoors and his passion for watercolor have lead him to this latest endeavor – painting actual landscape scenes on the topographical maps where the scenes can be found. Mike’s artwork is on display at the Big Horn Design and Art Gallery in Billings, Montana.
